New York – This is what the universe looks like when a long-dominant home textiles retailer departs the scene.
The legacy Bed Bath & Beyond company is no more, and for the first time in three decades, it does not appear on HTT’s exclusive Top 50 Retail Giants ranking.
In another first, HTT is making its annual ranking available in digital form ahead of print publication thanks sponsorship from Supima.
A few key findings:
- Today’s biggest retail accounts are discounters, off-pricers and a pair of powerful specialty stores, HomeGoods and Ikea. Most within that group steadily gained share in 2023.
- Amazon was also the largest gainer among the six retailers who grew their soft home sales by double-digits, leading that pack with sales up 17.3%.
- Despite the e-commerce giant’s robust growth, Walmart continues to dominate the field and sits comfortably ahead of its leading rivals on the ranking.
- Ross Stores moves up the ranking from #7 to #5.
- Burlington Stores joins the $1 Billion Club and rises to #8 in the ranking.
- Costco joins the Top 10 first the first time – even though it had the lowest home textiles sales gain in dollar terms among its peers in the Top 10.
- Kohl’s held onto its ranking #6 despite a wobbly year.
